Sometimes, I wonder why people don't laugh... Naw, that's not really true. I understand that my sense of humor may be a little different than others. But I really thought the opening illustration this last week was funny; in a cute way. But their reaction was even more comical:
“There was a little old church out in the country: it was painted white and with a high steeple. One Sunday, the pastor noticed that his church needed painting. He checked out the Sunday ads and found a paint sale. The next day, he went into town and bought a gallon of white paint. He went back out to the church and began the job. He got done with the first side. It was looking great. But he noticed he had already used a half gallon. He didn’t want to run back in town and being the creative person that he was, he found a gallon of thinner in the shed out back, and began to thin his paint. It worked out great. He finished the remaining three sides with that last half gallon of paint. That night, it rained: it rained hard. The next morning when he stepped outside of the parsonage to admire his work, he saw that the first side was looking great, but that the paint on the other three sides had washed away. The pastor looked up in sky in anguish and cried out, “What shall I do?” A voice came back from the heavens saying, “Repaint, and thin no more!”[1]”
This were they heckled me! With boos and I even saw a few rolling their eyes! I had to pause, here, so that I could chuckle and repeat,.“Repaint, and thin no more!.” I continued:
“John the Baptist came to prepare the people for the coming of the Lord. He preached in the wilderness of Judea; saying, "Repent… Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." And the people heard his message...
You see, that's the heart of the Gospel. The Heart of the Gospel is not some touchy, feely gospel where everyone goes to heaven and you don’t have to do anything to get there… It takes action on your part – a “life change” and a commitment. “Repent, and sin no more!””
Then I continued on with the sermon.
“Laugh on, laugh on my friend / Hee laugheth best that laugheth to the end”[2]
Why, would I laugh the best? When I asked my friends and family, “So what was the main point?” They remembered.
